How do I activate and use tips on my Qonto payment terminal?

  • Updated

You can now let your customers leave a tip when they pay by card on your Qonto payment terminal. When tips are activated, an optional tipping screen appears   before each payment, proposing 5%, 10% or 15% of the transaction amount. The customer can choose one of the options or skip the tip entirely. The tip is added to the total payment and credited to your Qonto account.

This feature is available to all Qonto customers with a physical Qonto point of sale (POS) terminal, across all plans. Tips are not available on Tap to Pay in our mobile apps.

How do I activate or deactivate tips?

💡 Good to know: Tips can only be activated via payment terminal.

Tips are deactivated by default, so you will need to enable them manually.

  1. Go to Options in the top-right corner of your terminal's home screen.
  2. Scroll down to the Tipping section located below Payment lists and settings.
  3. Here you can activate and deactivate tipping.
  4. Enter your PIN code (received by email following your payment terminal order) to confirm the setting.

The tips setting applies at the organization level. This means that when you activate tips, all terminals linked to your Qonto account will display the tipping screen. It is not possible to activate tips on one terminal and deactivate them on another.

Anyone with access to the terminal PIN can activate or deactivate tips. If you want to restrict who can change this setting, make sure only authorized team members have access to the PIN.

What does my customer see when tips are activated?

When tips are activated, your customer sees a tipping screen on the terminal before completing their payment. The screen offers four options:

  • 5% tip
  • 10% tip
  • 15% tip
  • Skip

If the customer chooses to leave a tip, the tip amount is added to the total transaction. For example, on a €50 payment with a 10% tip, the terminal will process a €55 transaction.

The tip percentages are currently fixed at 5%, 10%, and 15%. It is not possible to customize these percentages or to let the customer enter a custom tip amount. These are improvements we are considering for a future version.

How do tips appear in my account and my accounting?

The tip is merged into the total transaction amount in your Qonto account. There   is no separate line item showing the tip. For example, a €50 payment with a €5   tip will appear as a single €55 transaction.

To see the breakdown of tips, check the payout PDF, which is available the next business day. This document shows you which transactions included a tip and the corresponding amounts.

Since the tip is included in the total amount processed by the terminal, there may be a difference between what your cash register software records and what appears in your Qonto account. Your cash register records the original payment amount (e.g. €50), while the terminal processes the payment plus the tip (e.g.   €55). You will need to account for this difference manually when reconciling your books. The payout PDF will help you identify and reconcile these amounts.

Tips are not currently broken down by terminal or by employee in the app. This means you cannot track which terminal or which team member generated a specific tip. We are exploring this for a future version.

Regarding tax treatment, this varies depending on your country and local regulations. We recommend consulting your accountant or tax advisor to understand how tips should be reported and handled in your specific situation.

What are the current limitations of the tips feature?

The current version is a first release. Here is what is not yet available:

  • Tip amount visible per transaction in the app (use the payout PDF as an alternative)
  • Custom tip amounts or percentages (currently fixed at 5%, 10%, 15%)
  • Tips attributed to a specific employee or waiter
  • Tips split between multiple employees
  • Tips sent to a dedicated sub-account
  • Availability on Tap to Pay

We plan to improve the tips feature over time based on your feedback. If you have suggestions, reach out to our support team.

What should I do if tips are not working?

If you activated tips but the tipping screen does not appear on your terminal, here are a few things to check:

  1.     Wait a few minutes: the setting may take some time to propagate to your terminal.
  2.     Restart your terminal: this can help the new setting take effect.
  3.     Verify that tips are activated in your terminal settings.
